Southwestern Virginia Mental Health Institute offers a competitive benefits package, including:  

  • Health and Dental Insurance: the insurance includes medical, dental, generic prescription plan and mental health program.  Plans and current monthly rates attached, and listed on the web site.  www.dhrm.virginia.gov.
  • Basic Life Insurance: this is a free life insurance policy, which equals twice the employee’s annual salary, rounded to the nearest $1000.00.  Coverage begins the first day of employment.  www.varetire.org.
  • Optional Life Insurance: this is a benefit, which allows the employee to increase his or her basic life insurance coverage, as well as cover eligible dependents.  Premiums are payroll deducted.  www.varetire.org.
  • Virginia Retirement System:  this is an employer-contributory 401a retirement plan.  The employer contributes 5% of each pay period’s credible compensation.  The employee vests (becomes eligible for a pension) after five years of continuous state service.  www.varetire.org.
  • Deferred Compensation Program:  this is an employee-contributory 457B, pre-tax retirement plan.  It allows the employee to set aside, on a pre-tax basis, income for future financial security.  Full time employees qualify for an employer match up to $40.00 per month.  www.vadcp.com.

  • Virginia Sickness and Disability Program:  full time employees receive sick leave, family and personal leave, short-term and long-term disability benefits.  The program provides up to 10 days of sick leave and up to 5 days of family and personal leave per year.  It provides up to 125 workdays of short-term disability coverage, with 100-80-60% income levels.  Thereafter, the employee may qualify for long-term disability at 60% pre-disability income.  www.dhrm.virginia.gov.
  • Flexible Reimbursement Accounts:  this is pre-tax savings for medical and, or day care expenses.  www.dhrm.virginia.gov.
  • Employee Assistance Program:  this is a confidential assessment, referral, and short-term problem-solving service available through the health insurance plan(s).  www.achievesolutions.net/covacare.
  • Direct Deposit with access to Payline, state payroll system for pay/leave history

  • Leaves of Absence (Annual Leave, Compensatory Leave, Administrative Leave, Military Leave, Family and Medical Leave, Community Service Leave)
