Rehabilitative Services

The Rehabilitation Department consists of three components:  Central Rehabilitation Services, Occupational Therapy and Recreational Therapy.  Each component contributes to the overall Department MISSION by involving their specific disciplines to form partnership with individuals, families, and community, to assist individuals in achieving a chosen way of living with optimal levels of independence and mental health.

The Central Rehabilitation Service (CRS) area concentrates on involving each person in developing the readiness, motivation, and skills/ supports to participate in life roles to live where he/she wants, work or receive additional education as needed/wanted and socialize according to interests and preferences.  The CRS uses modalities such as woodshop, horticulture, domestic skills, ceramics, vocational, educational and enrichment areas, as well as implementation of the Psychiatric Rehabilitation curriculum designed by Boston University , to involve individuals in planning for their future community role.   The CRS Mission is to make recovery oriented care available to all .... RECOVERY .... WE GET IT!

The Occupational Therapy component operationalizes the Mission of providing person-centered evaluation and intervention to maximize the functional independence in chosen roles and occupations that support achievement of the individual's Long Term View.  Through focused evaluation, Occupational Therapists assist individuals to pinpoint barriers to success and prioritize physical and mental health needs.  Occupational Therapy approaches and modalities vary according to specific needs.  Cultural background, subjective experience and personal preference take a prominent place in developing holistic Treatment plans with each individual.   Discharge planning is based on individual choice, specialized assessment and/or home visits.  The focus is on the individual-environment fit including functional capacity, safety and well-being.  On October 31, 2007, the Occupational Therapist, along with other SWVMHI staff, participated in two days of training on the sensory approach to treatment.

The Mission for the Recreation Therapy component is commitment to providing comprehensive Recreation Therapy services which enable individuals of SWVMHI to achieve a higher quality of life by developing the skills and supports to participate in chosen life pursuits as independently as wanted or needed.  The Recreation Therapy process involves the individual in assessment, Treatment plan formulation, implementation of services and evaluation of progress and program effectiveness.  Recreation Therapists believe in the value and use of individualized activities (tools) to accomplish person-centered Treatment and Rehabilitation goals.  The Recreation Therapy services at SWVMHI are provided by professionals trained and certified to provide quality care.
